Sometimes I feel like Cinderella, or more specifically Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage. I spend a good portion of Monday through Friday staring at pixels, speaking QWERTY, and snoozing Outlook reminders… you know, usual pumpkin things. But with the wave of a magic wand, Saturday morning transforms pixels into dirt and rock, trades mouse clicks for F-stops, and sets the schedule by daylight and weather pattern.
I feel alive. And present. It. Is. Glorious.
Sadly, Cinderella’s magic mode of transport was one-time use. That’s where I differ from the traditional story, where begin to create my own.
One Foot in Front of the Other: The Year it All Began
The past year has been filled with mountain lessons too numbered to count, and I’ve only just begun. See, a couple years ago I decided that I wanted to climb big hills – maybe the seven summits or some of the other 8,000m peaks. So with the help of the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) I started learning the skills I’d need to accomplish such lofty goals (pun intended). And hailing from Florida, the skills I lacked were many, the least of which was simple high-altitude cardio endurance. That one is still in progress.
I’ve come a long way from the limitations of trudging up class 2 trails. Oh yes. Now I gasp and wheeze my way up class 3 and 4 routes as well. It isn’t graceful or pretty or speedy, but every route gets slightly easier(ish). More importantly though, are the moments, people and places that make each weekend hill-session so memorable. With only two months left in 2015, I want to share a few of my favorites. Time-warp commence!
